To some women, it feels like small bubbles rising to the surface. Others report that it feels similar to the pop of popcorn. Still others compare it to the fluttering of butterflies. Known as “quickening,” these first sensations usually signal the beginning of a string of motions that grow in regularity until childbirth. In this article, we’ll describe what to expect when your baby makes his first moves. Whether a light tap, a swift kick, or a little twist, it’s one of the exciting delights of being pregnant.

When Does It Start?

In most cases, quickening happens during the fourth or fifth month. Even though your baby starts moving toward the end of the second month, there won’t be enough strength behind his motions for you to feel them. He’s small and buried in your womb. Also, it’s worth noting that first-time mothers are less likely to be able to discern a kick from gas. Mothers who have already given birth tend to notice movements before new moms-to-be.

There are circumstances in which some pregnant women don’t feel their babies moving until well into their second trimester. There are a number of reasons why this might happen. Body weight is a factor as is the position of the fetus. The placenta can also cushion the kicks which may prevent you from feeling them.

No Need For Concern

Mothers-to-be are often concerned when they don’t feel their baby kicking and moving as they enter the second trimester. They might also be alarmed when movements subside or cease after starting. As noted, late quickening might be due to body weight, fetal positioning, or the location of the placenta. Even if you’re unable to feel your baby’s moves, you’ll probably be able to see them on ultrasound.

While it’s true that babies tend to pick up the pace of their squirming, kicking, and hitting once they begin, it’s common for them to take a break every now and then. Feeling a few kicks on Monday may be followed by a motionless Tuesday. There is usually nothing to worry about. Having said that, if you notice a long period of silence, let your obstetrician know. A quick test should confirm that all is well.

Tracking The Movements

A lot of doctors will strongly suggest that you begin tracking your little one’s karate chops once you have reached the third trimester. By that time, you won’t have trouble identifying your baby’s kicks and squirms. He’ll have grown big enough to let you know he’s there. The best way to track his movements is to pick a time each day and make a note regarding how long it takes you to feel 10 moves. If a few hours pass before you notice them, call your obstetrician.

Your baby’s first motions inside your stomach will be one of the greatest joys of your pregnancy. They’ll serve as constant proof that a beautiful life is growing within you.

Also consider a with a night light on the baby unit to give a comforting glow in the dark to reassure your child.

* If you are concerned that you might disturb your baby when entering the nursery? If so you might want to consider a monitor with a night light on the baby unit so there is no need to disturb your baby using the main light in the nursery.

* You may be concerned that you might forget when the next feed is due during the night? In order to reduce uncertainty about when the next feed is due, the innovative last feed timer on our top of the range Tomy Baby alkabout Platinum Digital Monitor will keep track for you.

* Are you concerned that the temperature of your nursery might not be comfortable? In order to keep the nursery at the ideal temperature you might want to consider a monitor with an in-built temperature display enabling you to continuously monitor the temperature of your baby’s room. If you’re also concerned about temperature variances overnight in the nursery you might want to consider the Tomy Baby Walkabout Platinum Digital Monitor which records the maximum and Minimum temperature the nursery got to during the night.

* Do you want to be able to judge the intensity of your babies sound when not in the nursery? If so consider a Baby Monitor Reviews with a sound-sensitive light display which is a display of moving lights which echo the level of your baby’s sounds meaning you can stay alert to your baby’s needs even with the sound turned down and can also judge when you want to react to your baby’s sounds.

* If you have two small children and want to use 2 monitors at the same time? It is possible, however, it is not recommended to have two analogue monitors in close proximity as interference between the two monitors could prevent them from working properly. You will need to use 2 DECT monitors in close proximity is fine and both will work normally with no interference.

When you’re pregnant, it’s important to set time aside to make sure you’re staying healthy and fit. It’s not easy. Your body is going through a constant workout each day from carrying your child. By the time evening comes around, getting motivated to move your limbs and flex your muscles may seem like a lesson in defeat.

That said, there are many reasons to exercise during your pregnancy. To motivate you to get started and inspire you to action, here are four great reasons to work out.

#1 – You’ll Feel Energized

Being pregnant can take an enormous toll on your energy level. By exercising in the morning, you can gain the energy boost you need to carry you throughout the day. Not only will the exercise release endorphins which give you an immediate energized feeling, but you’ll also be working out your cardio system. That increases your stamina allowing you to get through each day more easily.

#2 – You’ll Sleep Better

Believe it or not, while your body may feel exhausted at the end of the day, there’s actually plenty of pent-up energy inside. The problem is that it can prevent you from getting a good night’s rest. During your pregnancy, you’ll lie in bed, tired from the afternoon, but unable to get to sleep.

Exercising expends that energy. By the time you’re in bed, your mind and your body will drift easily to slumber.

#3 – You’ll Prepare Your Body For Giving Birth

Childbirth will be a strain on your body. Not only can labor last for several hours, but the entire experience will require the use of many muscles. When you exercise, you put those muscles to use. Whether you’re working out your pelvic muscles, abdominals, or thighs and hips, doing so can make childbirth easier. Many women have reported that labor lasted for a shorter time and progressed more smoothly after having exercised during their pregnancy.

#4 – You’ll Reclaim Your Figure More Quickly

Have you ever observed new mothers who have recently given birth and wondered how they managed to get their pre-pregnancy bodies back so quickly? Chances are, they were exercising while they were pregnant. When you exercise daily, your muscles grow accustomed to the activity. After you give birth, those muscles can bounce back quickly because they’re already efficient. Before long, other pregnant women will be looking at your figure wondering how you managed to do it.

There are plenty of reasons to work out during your pregnancy. Besides staying fit, you’ll enjoy more energy, better sleep, an easier childbirth experience, and a fast return to your previous figure. Speak with your obstetrician to make sure your exercise routine is safe. Then, get to work and start enjoying the benefits.
